With a growing corporate client base (350+ and counting) - our diverse team is headquartered in Paris and operates out of our 14 global offices in North America, Europe, Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong.



Descartes Underwriting is seeking an R&D Data Scientist to join our R&D Team. You will be a key contributor to the deployment of R&D projects. The applicant will be in close and effective cooperation with all business units and play a vital role in the following activities:

  • Proposing and implementing improvements to our climate risk models;
  • Surveying new advances in risk modeling and critically assessing their relevance to Descartes’ risk modeling strategy;
  • Strengthening our core modeling knowledge on specific perils;
  • Identifying, implementing, and deploying improvements of the current insurance product offering;
  • Collaborating with the underwriting and business teams to ensure our products are efficiently integrated into the underwriting process and meet our clients’ needs;
  • Working autonomously and pragmatically to make appropriate technical decisions.

  • Master’s Degree in physics, applied mathematics, or meteorological studies;
  • Multi-disciplinary curriculum, with strong skills in statistics, applied mathematics and machine learning;
  • Ideally a previous experience in climate modeling or data science;
  • Working autonomously and pragmatically to make appropriate technical decisions.


  • Proficiency in Python and data science;
  • Fluency in English (written and verbal communication) required;
  • Good command of one additional language (e.g. Chinese, French, Italian, German, Spanish…) valued.


  • Interested in weather and natural perils modelling (wildfires, hail, tsunamis, earthquakes etc.);
  • Strong team spirit and ability to work under pressure;
  • Highly motivated, able to meet deadlines set;
  • Motivated to help improving businesses’ and communities’ resilience to climate change;
  • Eager to learn more about the insurance industry and to work in an international environment;
  • Results oriented, high energy, with the ability to work in a dynamic and multi-cultural environment;
